Decades of research have demonstrated complexity and high heterogeneity of this disease. The tumor heterogeneity is a result of many altered genomic, epigenomic, and protein modification states that contribute to a distinctive proliferative advantage. The same deregulations that initiate tumorigenesis of mammary epithelial cells are believed to coerce therapeutic resistance. On the other hand, population-wide screenings have increased diagnosis of women with breast cancers without specificity for the tumors with an aggressive phenotype.
