   <dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en_US">Prxs are a family of antioxidant proteins that are the predominant peroxidase within the cell. This thesis research focuses on the structure and biochemistry of peroxiredoxins (Prx) and their sensitivity to inactivation by their own substrate, in a process called hyperoxidation. Hyperoxidation sensitivity is important to study because Prxs are implicated in many different diseases. For example, Prxs contribute to chemo- and radioresistance in cancers, so by sensitizing a Prx to inactivation, it may be possible to resensitize cancer cells to therapy.</dim:field>
