abstract
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition and the most common form of dementia in senior adults, affecting an estimated 6.7 million Americans aged 65 and older as of 2023. Despite advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of AD, there is no cure, and the disease leads to profound atrophy of the brain and ultimately, death. The hippocampus, a structure of the brain recognized for its pivotal role in the processing and encoding of long-term memory, stands as a particularly susceptible brain region in this context. The early vulnerability and consistent involvement in the cognitive decline (i.e., memory loss) markedly characteristic of the disease make the hippocampus of great scientific interest in studies of AD pathology.
