Description
The smokestack came down on May 14th, 1969 but not without a struggle. It took almost four hours, eight tries and considerably more drilling around the base of the chimney before it finally gave way. The 150-foot chimney had served the North Carolina Baptist Hospital heating plant for 15 years. Heat for the Medical Center, under the new system in 1970, would be supplied by two large boilers, fired by gas and oil. These fuels produce a minimal amount of smoke. Precipitators were also installed to further minimize air pollution from the plant.
