Description
Dr. Manson Meads joined the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1947 as Instructor of Internal Medicine when antibiotics were in the early stages of development. During his 36-year tenure with the school, he accomplished such goals a being a scientist, teacher, administrator, fundraiser and most of alla builder. Under his leadership, the Medical Center completed its 15-year expansion program which, at that time, was the largest health science building program in the state of North Carolina. Dr. Meads retired in 1983 after holding such titles as professor of medicine, chairman of the Department of Preventive Medicine, associate dean, academic dean, executive dean, dean, vice president for health affairs, and director of the Medical Center. The first product of his retirement was the book "Miracle on Hawthorne Hill", which chronicles the history of the Medical Center to 1985. In 1992, Dr. Meads was recognized by the renaming of the Family Practice Building to "Meads Hall."
