Description
Congress first appropriated approximately $3 million for the construction of the Center for Research on Human Nutrition and Chronic Disease Prevention in 1989. The original goal of the facility was to reduce chronic diseases through the study of diet and nutrition. The federal government ended up reducing the funds from three million to $1.825 million by the time the construction actually began in 1992. Consequently, the Nutrition Center was slowly worked on floor by floor as funding was received. As you drive by Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center on I-40, the Nutrition building can be spotted easily because of its signature "green glass." Breaking ground are (L-R) J. Paul Sticht, Forsyth County Commissioner Wayne Willard, Winston-Salem Mayor Martha Wood, Senator Terry Sanford, State Republican Steve Neal, Dr. Richard Janeway and Len Preslar.
