Description
Dr. Richard L. Witcofski was recruited to Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1957 to work in radiologic physics. He became an instructor in 1961, assistant professor in 1967 and full professor of nuclear medicine in 1972. He was also involved in the first lung scans in the country, the first development of renal function tests in the country and in the original clinical trials of the radionuclide Tc99mc as a tracer. Bowman Gray School of Medicine was the second medical center in the country to use this Tc99m and Dr. Witcofski was the first person in the country to actually try it intravenously. Drs. Witcofski and Cowan, both of nuclear medicine, retired at the same time in 1998.
