- Brittany McGee is the Owner and Head Chef of The Humble Bee Shoppe and Bakery in Winston-Salem. McGee's situation as a local business owner is unique because she does not have other full-time employees besides herself, so she did not have to worry about paying salaries. In this interview, she discusses "pivoting" her business model to include online preordering and delivery and notes that her business model continues to change as the customers' needs do. She reflects on how her long-term plans for her business have changed, how she's been able to get in touch with her intuition and values, and how the pandemic has given her the opportunity to rest and then become more creative. Although, as an incredibly small establishment, it is difficult for her to comment on support from the local government, she notes gratitude for the local business community in Winston-Salem and how many of them have collaborated together and helped one another during the outbreak. She seeks to embrace the perspective of a job as a "service," rather than "work."
